From the Latin "insolitus" (which means "unusual, strange, uncommon"), and the Greek "logos" (which means "study"). It is therefore the study of the unusual and strange.
I'm an insolitology student. I'm writing a thesis on Gene Ray, the discoveror of "Time Cube."
This word might be a little to cutting edge.
From insolitology.com:
Insolitology is the facetious study of oddity and weird sites on the web, and entertainment based on them. Includes crackpots of the Internet.

Should suit this crowd just right, don't you think?Includes crackpots of the Internet.

Here's a vital word for the times indeed.
Although at first glance I thought it might describe what we're doing over here.

Stop! Murder us not, tonsured rumpots! Knife no one, fink!
Finally! A word that describes my quirky curiosity in things that start off normal and progressively become weirder. But I guess the word has been there all along and have only just now come across it by gazing upon eberntson's Good Word Suggestion. Well done!
I only wish I had the word tucked up somewhere in my toboggan to pull out and throw around when one of the local morticians suggested I become an undertaker upon seeing my "insolitus" reaction to a...shall we say... recently departed soul (sic) they were removing from my mom's house last year. I bet he would have know the word.

A search on Google for insolitology only returns 3,210 references, the majority refer to the insolitology.com website. I think this is a word to watch because it really does fit well into the Intranet vocabulary.
As for crackpots, I am not one, I am still working on metamorphasizing into an eccentric.

Funny, I passed weird a decade ago, and am heading to eccentric. Weird to me is someone that is unaware of their strangeness. Eccentrics are aware they just don't care.
My goal is eccentric & harmless, mostly.
