This is a variety of apple. But I haven't found out why it is called "spy". No one at my local orchard company had a clue, and I couldn't come up with anything on the internet.
A tad recondite, I know, but perhaps someone can help me find the answer.

Since the northern spy apple is also called northern spie and northern pie, I suggest it may be a corruption of pie. They are pie apples.
It is dark at night, but the Sun will come up and then we can see.
