Lately this word has been popping up for me. First, I used it while out with my 7 yr old grandson, pointing some graffiti out on a bridge. He had never heard the word before.
Then later that week I heard it came from an Italian word meaning "scratch or to scratch".
And in today's Good Word "orthography" , it mentions "the Greek stem graph- comes from a root meaning "to scratch"

I hVe a book on college graffiti, which is hilarious. You can find web sites full of it. I added one to a recent thread on this site that has several. Unfortunately, most of it is obscene and brainless, but when some people set their hands to it...
