Re: Inventory

I sometimes try to play with inventory to make it a manufacturing line of inventions - 'invention factory' = 'inventory'. Just put the accent on the 'e' and it kind of works.

Re: Conscience

Alas, a defendant who has scienter may nevertheless be lacking in conscience.
Unless, of course, we are talking about the science of the con!

Having a conscience goes hand in hand with being moral, wouldn't you say?

Re: Ramadan

It must be about time for the lunar calendars to add their 'leap' month. Next year Ramadan begins on February 28th!

Re: ANIMUS

After a some thought over the course of today, I've pretty much come to the conclusion that Meaning 2 has completely obliterated Meaning 1. It may be there when reading an older text, but all I feel is the animosity version when I think of it.

Re: Figurehead

Aren't the Kings and Queens of Great Britain now basically figureheads of state? It's the PM who really holds the reins, correct?

As far as going up to someone and addressing them, I can't think of a word other than the simple 'approach' that isn't aggressive or bold. You?

Re: Scrimp

Seems to me that meaning 1 is only if used with something about saving, and even then it could still be taken as 2, Then again, I guess we could say something like, "He scrimped up enough to buy his texts for this term"? Without the 'up', though, it would feel like meaning 2 to me.

Especially given the shared root, I think I'd accept 'stentorian thunder' as a non-voice related usage. Anyone else? :?:

I don't think I can see this word without thinking Stevie Wonder. That was a great song. Here's a youboob version, in case you want a listen.

Re: Just a query about punctuation.

Odd choice of phrasing. I'd simply put the food trucks before the bounce house. It eliminates the need for a comma and puts the funner, perhaps more enticing attraction, at the end, giving it more emphasis.

Re: Concord

Here's a piece on the internot I found that explains some of the differences. It gets repetitive, and may even be machine generated for all I know, but it does help. Of course, accordance and concordance have different usages, at least as far as making a list of words used by an author or in a work...

Re: Exculpatory

"Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa" (intoned while beating one's breast).

Anachronistic or facetious now, but a formal way of begging forgiveness once upon a time.
