LECTORS

Any relation between "lectors" and "electors"--other than the presumption in some quarters that of the two one is presumed to be more eloquent and erudite than the other?

Corn

This is a suggestion of "corn" as a Good Word, as well as a way to make readers aware of a complementary web site. Delanceyplace [daily@delanceyplace.ccsend.com] is a brief daily email with an excerpt or quote viewed as interesting or noteworthy, offered with commentary to provide context....

Re: If you don't do the first,,,,

Your expectations of me may be too high: It wasn't meant to be a monumental epiphany, but rather the suggestion of VOTE as a heretofore unused Good Word suggestion, with an observation en passant (in passing) that it contains the same letters as VETO--with a distant rational nexus between them.

Re: four flusher

PL: Of course I did. The fact that I wrote that entry on the same day I had to call 9-1-1 for an ambulance to take me to the ER because of presenting the symptoms of controlled-substance (prescribed) medication withdrawal could have something to do with it. (I simply got immersed in something; faile...

Re: four flusher

It is with great trepidation that I contradict my many betters, but as it is used in gambling a four-flusher is a person who has four cards of the same suit, with the fifth concealed in his (or her) hand until eventually it's "read 'em & weep" time. The player with the four same-suit s...

Out with the old....

This seems like a propitious moment to take my medulla oblongata broom and sweep out the words that seemed to have had such great potential as GWs at the time I jotted them down, but which—with the passage of time—have become less and less stellar choice it has become painfully obvious by the year’s...

"Rube" from "rhubarb"?

I know it's a reach, but is there a rational nexus between "rube" and "rhubarb"? The former is usually a term reserved for a hick or bumpkin; in the carnival world, "Hey, Rube!" was the coded cry for help from one carney to any other member of the carnival brotherhood, ...

tomboy

I would add "like Tom Sawyer", except that Master Sawyer WAS a boy; my word refers to one who is neither a boy nor is very likely to be named "Tom".

mull or mulled

I've heard of "mull" used as a word to describe reflective contemplation, as in "I'll have to mull that over for a while, to make sure that due diligence has been exercised; the only use of "mulled" that comes to mind is in "mulled wine", with the implication being...

Re: Loo

From the sublime to the ridiculous: Mention has been made of “water closet” (or, shortened to “W.C.”) as an alternative to “loo”; I’m wondering how many of those who lurk the dim corners of the Alpha Agora will admit to being old enough to remember the night that Johnny Carson attempted to begin his...

Re: Nomenclature

Since neither Dr. G nor my mentor, Slava, appear to be interested in supplying the derivation of the word, I'll toss out what I know about it and its function in ancient Rome In ancient Rome a man seeking office formally donned a special white “toga candidata" (from which we get our word candid...

Re: Nomenclature

Not even close. "Nomenclature" was derived from this word, which was a sine quae non (literally: That without which, not; something crucial to the functioning of those wishing to achieve election to the loftier planes of higher political office in earlier Rome). I'd be glad to share it wit...
