Very useful and succinct differentiation of words I think most of us use instinctively in that way.
Thanks!!!

Re: Enervate

tkowal, thanks for finding that one. I think there is an important difference, and it would help to emphasize it by pronouncing enervate (short first E) and denervate (long first E) Enervate is to sap the power of the message, denervate is to actually cut the nerve-- i.e. no message. I would settle ...

Re: Ad hoc

In addition to "ad hocery", "ad hocy"?
I'm assuming in both cases the hard "c" would be retained.

I would guess that working in a restaurant would induce a strong yen for college in most anyone.

Re: Calamity

There is a town (and a very short river) near hear called Kalama.
Care to move?
You could start a couple of businesses-- one selling short (and/or long) sleeved knit shirts, the other leaves of various types for making hot (or iced) beverages.

Re: Glottogony

what makes us think that other species have no language, if we set aside the fact that WE can't understand THEM. I suppose it depends on the definition of language, but that is entirely at the mercy of prejudice. When the crows come flying in to the yard next door to chase away a bird of prey after ...

"The only other occurrence of this word is in Avestan, an ancestor of Persian, hamista- "throw under, subdue"

Which begs the question, no demands! I ask, what is the Avestan word for "bus"? ("cart" would do)

Re: Nosegay

Thank you for your help and bless you for your resourcefulness! I'm no closer to understanding how it came about, as the suggestion that the Latin source might be tuss-- cough. I suppose that a strong smell might lead to coughing, but that seems antithetical to the word's use. While I'm grateful, I'...

Are all gremlins as perspicacious as those employed here?
I never thought of them in so positive a light.

excoriate, core

Are they from the same source?
One seems to be for the outside, and the other for the inside.
Are both related to "coeur, corazon"? Are they related to whatever gave us corps and corpse?

Thank you, good Doctor, but could you perhaps suggest where I might try to find out the etymology of tussie-mussie? I can't begin to see where it came from or what it might be related to. I tried, but am limited in my ability to find things on the internet (or internot, as Slava said) and stymied by...
