You learn something new every day, at least you should.

I have always pronounced this one as tro-pee. Come to find out it's all of one syllable.
Well in French that would be "too much pee" (spelled differently, though). Stick to one syllable.

I wonder what level of disdain has led to deign not getting onto our word list? It's been suggested, but the Dr. has not deigned to take it up as yet.

Let's hope that is soon remedied.
Is something rotten in Deignmark?

Re: Exiguous

Exiguous (adjective) Meagre, scanty. (From Latin exiguus , from exigere , to measure out.) I always think this word sounds as if it means the opposite, with its echoes of 'exceptional' and 'prodigious'. "Your vocabulary is exiguous", said the teacher. "Thank you very much", repl...

Re: First usage

We would in England talk of a mooted Severn Barrage (possibly around 8 - 15 GW peak generation depending on site) almost interchangeably with Dam. However the first pronounciation is certainly completely unknown to me.
You would, but for what? Or do I misconstrue?

Rupee is from the Sanskrit word "ruupyakam" which means "wrought silver." I suppose the system "worked" because the "wrought" part guaranteed to the recipient that the coin was genuine. Yen and yuan are words meaning "round object" "circle.&quo...
