Re: Err

Always "air" wherever I've lived.
The occasional "ur" gets an odd look from all in earshot.

Re: COMPUNCTION

A popular, very mainstream example that popped into mind is Will Smith, whether recently on David Letterman, or for movie themes such as Men In Black and The Wild Wild West. Of course, he's still remembered for the theme he rapped to his first television show, Fresh Prince. <--- I watched that inter...

Re: Fritter

Yes; that ^ was silly for several reasons. Stephen Colbert jokingly renamed English muffins "Liberty Toast" earlier this month in response to UK decisions.
Giselle's vase fell and broke into fritters.
That's a new usage to me. I think I'll skip using it around here.

Is cool still cool slang?
For awhile there, it was spelled kewl, which caused my eyes to narrow whenever it appeared in emails from my own contemporaries. Still, better even kewl than illy...

Re: Pareidolia

Gilbert & George: how have I missed out on them? Thank you! The images seem like another riff on the brightly colored, highly stylized stained glass windows in British cathedrals and Stately Homes. I didn't know the term droodles, but first learned to make them in Girl Scout camp long, long ago ...

Re: Berserk

It is possible "berserk" and "amok" represent the same metal state across cultures. A rose by any other name... I intended to smile at your typo and move on, but after your link I'm wondering if Riot gear clothing is sufficient protection against berserk Metal State slam dancing...

Re: Berserk

I'm afraid I tend to use berserk frivolously. I've been coveting an expensive fabric and this past weekend decided to add a yard to my stash; upon finding out that it was on sale I told the clerk I would go berserk and get two yards.

She understood completely. :D

Re: Pareidolia

'Seeing things' within the visual environment is so much a part of the human experience that many artists have made their reputations by skillfully hiding faces and objects within their work for the delight of both their patrons and the larger public. Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526?-1593) had great humor...

Re: Pareidolia

Penn and Teller's Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends included instructions for painting the face of the devil on a random tortilla in a package (with lemon juice), before inviting friends over for dinner. They emphasized not making the drawing too perfect; it needed to have a properly organic, is-it-or-i...
