Well, the etymological explanation for this apparently Scottish word is that it is onomatopoeic. My, how the Scots laugh!

This one I've been looking at for more than a decade. The history of this word is too shallow. It goes back to Scottish gawf which is assumed to be onomatopoeic. There is no evidence of it in any other language that I can find.
