lumber
lumber
What's the relation between "lumber" as a piece of wood (also an associated descriptor, as in "lumberyard", "lumber baron", "lumberjack") and the verb "lumber" as in ponderous movement (and its descriptor, "lumbering", as in "lumbering oaf")? Okay, "lumber" can also mean to cut timber (also with "lumbering"), but it apparently can also mean to impose an obligation on someone.

Taken up and treated here.
