Pageant
Pageant
David Mamet, the playwright and screenwriter, has described presidential campaigns as pageants. And the old writer William Allen White wrote a book on the topic entitled "Masks in a Pageant". As a way of comparing one of our fundamental political processes to a beauty contest, I think this word merits being featured in a daily good word discussion.

Re: Pageant
Mr. Mamet was writing in a bygone age. There is far too much mud for any pageantry to survive in our modern political stage productions.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
