men·thol
Pronunciation: 'men-"thol, -"thOl
Function: noun
Etymology: German, ultimately from Latin mentha mint
1 : a crystalline alcohol C10H20O that occurs especially in mint oils and has the odor and cooling properties of peppermint
2 plural : mentholated cigarettes
Wondered where this came from after hearing a Southern Kulture on the Skids song that says "He smells like a mentholated soda pop"...
Don't know what kind that would be...

Re: menthol
Well I know this is an old thread, but it may be worthy of this addendum.
I came across this beauty today on my local Council's website advising what can be dropped off at the waste collection site:
paints (or paint-related products i.e. Mentholated spirits, paint stripper) - household amount only
Nice to be reminded that Malaprop lives.
But in a swift google, we find: “mentholated spirits” gets 10,500 hits, against 385,000 for “methylated spirits”.
If it scores 2.5% of the total hits, then it is surely widely enough used to have become a true and real use. If not, then what % does constitute truth?
Let's all wash our brushes in mentholated spirits and raise a glass of creme de meths.

Re: menthol
I ran mentholated spirits through another search engine. It automatically corrected it to methylated, but offered the option of looking up just mentholated. It still showed only methylated first. I gather there is a band out there called Mentholated Spirits, but that's it.
A couple of the other hits showed metholated, too. Which makes me question their validity as sources for whatever information they are pushing.
Personally, I'd say Gargle is off the mark on this one.
PS: methylated spirits are also called denatured. Does that mean they've been spayed?

Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

They may have been spayed, but they are still pretty potent.
