This word seems to be used so synonymously with courageous, that a second meaning "excellent" or "splendid" is almost lost. Consider "brave new world". This word is found in the American national anthem and this additional meaning is thought provoking.
A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver Proverbs 25:11
