Accipitrine

Postby Slava » Wed Oct 24, 2007 10:34 pm

Hawk-like, relating to birds of prey, raptorial (another word to suggest, perhaps?).

What is the equivalent for doves? Then we could talk about accipitrine and xxx members of Congress.

Oh, wait a minute, we already talk about xxx members of Congress. However, I was thinking of the hawks and doves comparison, not the other one.

Interesting word, slava! I knew that dove = columba, but I'm not finding an adjective aside from the rather unassuming 'dove-like'.

Etymonline says of dove:
political meaning "person who advocates peace" first attested 1962, during Cuban Missile Crisis.
and of hawk:
Hawkish "militaristic" first attested 1965; hawk in this sense is attested from 1962.

Who remembers Sr. Colomba for her sharp eyes, beak-like visage and rather accipitrine personality...
