It's been mentioned in several posts on other words. Perhaps it is time it got the full treatment on its own?Aphesis is the omission of the initial sound or syllable of a word.

Aphesis
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
It is a shame that Ogden Nash didn't write a poem containing pathetic, aphetic, and prophetic... It would have been a hoot probably...aphetic
1880, from aphesis, coined by OED editor Sir James A.H. Murray (1837-1915) for "gradual and unintentional loss of a short unaccented vowel at the beginning of a word" (as squire from esquire), from Gk. aphienai "to let go, to send forth," from apo- "from" + hienai "to send."
