Postby Slava » Sun Sep 24, 2023 6:22 am

Yes, there is such a creature, and it is today September 24.

May you all have a wonderfully, and properly, punctuated day!

How do you punctuate
Eats shoots and leaves
How many commas would you advocate
or the famous passage that begins
yes because he never did a thing like that before as ask to get his breakfast in bed with a couple of eggs since . . . yes

Well, if it's about a panda in a saloon, Eats, shoots, and leaves.

If it's not about a panda, Eats shoots and leaves.

The other one I'm not familiar with.

This is like my father's example of the importance of word order. In the following sentence, where do you put the word 'only'?

"I hit him in the eye."

It depends on what you mean, which word or phrase you want to modify.

Did only you hit him in the eye?
Did you only hit him in the eye?
Did you hit only him in the eye?
Did you him him only in the eye?

You forgot 'the only eye'.

But, yes, this was the idea my father was trying to get across to his students; order matters.
