A colleague or companion. Just shooting from the hip here, but I figure it’s a combination of con (with) and frater (brother). Interesting that the German equivalent is Mitbrüder, with brother.

I've always appreciated that in some languages brother is brat. Then again, as that goes both ways, it's not so great for me. Then again, it does make it possible to be a brat to my brat, and get away with it.
