vistas

Postby Klimt » Thu Oct 04, 2007 9:32 pm

1.
a) A distant view or prospect, especially one seen through an opening, as between rows of buildings or trees.

b) An avenue or other passage affording such a view.

2. An awareness of a range of time, events, or subjects; a broad mental view: "the deep and sweeping vistas these pioneering critics opened up" (Arthur C. Danto).

Nice Autumn suggestion, Klimt.

AHD says this word derives from weid-, which also gives us both guide and visa for those very distant prospects.

-gailr

hmmm, weid- also gives us Hades, for those very, very distant prospects ... perhaps the ultimate residence of the art critics in Arthur C. Danto's quote?
