Not sure!

It sounds awkward to me in any case, though it may be correct usage!

I think the passive sounds "moderne," while the active sounds archaic.

"The minister was reprobated by his king....."

We'll see what the Doc says!

precipitatory

Is there an adjective form, "precipitatory," or is this just a forward formation? (As in a "precipitatory event") It is quite common on the internet! If there is an impending precipitatory event, and I have to operate a motor vehicle during the time in which that event will be oc...

Good question, Henri! "He was officially reprobated by his company for taking kickbacks under the table." Is this a passive construction? Can we say?: His company officially reprobated him for taking kickbacks under the table. This doesn't sound right to me! But, perhaps it is! He reprobat...

And, wow, did you have to mention the Oaxacan Red Mole Sauce. Over some chicken that would sure beat the Au Gratin Potatos I have in the oven right now!

Henri, how endearingly sentimental! Very true and very sweet, indeed!

Languages: Old English : slincan

What happened to "slank?"

I use "slunk" like the poor ol' celto-saxon that I am who can't even bring himself to capitalize the tribal names of his ancestors.

Henri: Not so sure, Tim ! I, at any rate, find it interesting that Katy and I disagree about the canonical order in the neutral case, she preferring «new, big, blue house» and I «big new blue house». Katy's is the only neutral reading: The new big blue house.... But, in constrast, I intuitively feel...

Flam: I hear a puff after every [p] in English. There is no unaspirated [p] in English phonology. I believe this is technically untrue! It is true that there are no unaspirated "p's" when it is not part of a consonant cluster, but the aspiration disappears when "p" is the second ...

By "Exactly, Katy!" I was talking about your suggestion for the ten most recent posts page.

As for your being on drugs and half-crazy, I have no comment, so I'll let your words speak for themselves.

The global warming scam '"Global warming" was invented in 1988, when it replaced two earlier myths of an imminent plunge into another Ice Age and the threat of a nuclear winter. The new myth was seen to encapsulate a whole range of other myths and attitudes that had developed in the 1960s...
