Good for you, Audi, you obviously see this list
as going somewhere......I would still like Bill O'D
(who started it) to explain his goals, if any.

O - I know this does not fit, but OBERON, is from
'auberon' a Germanic word related to "elf" -this list's theme.

O -perhaps "oneiric", 'of a dreamy quality'.

And thanks for the zelda-esque. Someone must play
video games to come up with that. Zelda must be
some kind of elfish creature in the game. I don't play
so have no frame of reference.

Thanks for your work, however.

Elfin redux

Postby wsodonnell2 » Sat Dec 31, 2011 2:13 pm

Only a few left to go...

Apologia:
In general I'm hostile to neologism, but there are times when it's irresistible, e.g. Slava's Elfin Adjective Challenge.

In keeping with "2. Small and sprightly or mischievous.
3. Having a magical quality or charm; fairylike"
(from thefreedictionary.com):

Xenophilic is meant to convey a tendency to the foreign or exotic.
Yeasty conveys a lightness or evanescence, which, come to think of it, we could add to the list.
Zelda-esque refers of course to American literature's quintessential elfin, Zelda Fitzgerald.

Happy Ball Drop to All !!!

A- alluring, appealing, attractive,
B- bewitching,
C- captivating, charismatic, charming,
D- darling, delectable, delightful,
E- enchanting, engaging, entrancing, enticing, evanescent
F- fascinating, fetching,

H- heartwarming, heavenly,
I- inviting, Impeccable
J- juvenescent
K- kissable,
L- luring, lithesome
M- magnetic,
N-
O-
P- pleasing, prepossessing,
Q-
R- radiant, ravishing,
S- seductive
T- tempting,
U-
V- voluptuous,
W- winsome

How's about nymphal/nymphean for N?
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

A word game.....and I enjoyed it. I would not call it
"pointless", just an exercise and one which fulfilled
a sort of holiday fun.

You seem delightful: a walking thesaurus.
Do you do this in conversation or just here?
Great for parties ! !

Perhaps you could do a new Amplified Bible. If you don't know it, it strings together multiple translations in series, so if you don't read the original languages, you can get a better sense of the nuances of the Greek or Hebrew. You could go a step further and amplify the amplified with the thesaurus!

It's a bit tongue in cheek. I've heard many laity comment they looked up such and such a word in Webster's, which can be very misleading. For example, "patience" in KJV would most often be better translated "endurance."

That's where a "concordance" especially one with
definitions, would be most apopros. I have several.

Concordances with definitions are good.
