Pronunciation Section?
What do the Agorans think of adding a new section on Pronunciations? I'm thinking of things like saying the-A-ter for theater, or ashphalt for asphalt. It would help add to the understanding of where things are said and how. Here are a couple of links that might help you decide:
Speaking Proper
Nucular Defense
Just thought I'd run that up the pole and see if anyone salutes it.

Re: Pronunciation Section?
How do you propose to indicate the various pronunciations since we can't easily use diacritical marks, Trager-Smith or the IPA?

One thing that would help would be to get the accented characters box back. However, using the method the Dr. uses for the daily word seems to work for most.

What's wrong with Most Often Mispronounced Words that updating wouldn't solve?

Re: Pronunciation Section?
Just today, my wife was telling my daughter about a conversation with out grandson. Vivian said she often didn't know how to pronounce some of the newer words, often computer lingo, that she had read but never heard. In that conversation, she mentioned a word she did know how to pronounce and proceded to mispronounce it. Probably we can all relate here.

Re: Pronunciation Section?
The two words she mentioned in conversation were chipotle and latte. Neither were computer words, though she mentioned having trouble with those.

But how did she pronounce them?
Which gets us to the key question in connection with this Pronunciation Section: how do we indicate pronunciations here? Are there any guidelines? If so, where?

Also, if you were to click on the link to the new Pronunciation section, the following message appears: "You do not have the required permissions to read topics within this forum." So it does not seem to be "up and running" yet.

Re: Pronunciation Section?
On reading that the QB for my favorite Saints had injured his "left oblique," I had to look up the muscle. (It's beside the abs.) that reminded me that while in the ROTC as a college freshman, the drill sergeant taught us a movement called the right or left oblique. But he is the only one who pronounced it with a long I, to rhyme with white. Anyone else ever hear it that way? I assumed it sounded more clearly on the parade ground.

I would really like to see the new Pronunciation section actually work. So far, no one is allowed to access it, in any way, shape, or form.

Slava bogu, as the Russkies might say. I hope it turns out to be of interest to others here, and in various ways.
Let us all go ghoti and play around.
